Standby generator demand South Africa, as the grid recovers

Eskom's diesel bill is down R4.87 billion and load reduction is down 88.6%. Public buyers are still tendering generators. What a brand should read from that.

By the Arabella team

Standby generator demand in South Africa has not yet followed Eskom's improving numbers down. Eskom reports its diesel spend down R4.87 billion this year, yet our catalogue of public procurement held 35 generator lines on 19 October, against 36 in our earlier count. For a brand, the buyers are still buying.

The figures are from Eskom's update of 16 October. They are good news for the grid and worth reading carefully before anyone concludes that the generator market is shrinking.

What did Eskom actually report?

Eskom reported that its year-to-date Energy Availability Factor reached 68.2%, the highest in six years. Year-to-date diesel expenditure fell by R4.87 billion, or 80.47%, to R1.18 billion, against R6.05 billion in the same period last year. South Africa has gone 518 consecutive days without loadshedding since 16 May 2025.

On load reduction, a separate intervention in specific high-risk areas, Eskom says the number of affected customers fell from about 1.69 million to 193 556. That is an 88.6% reduction and leaves 2.7% of its customer base affected. The remaining impact sits in selected areas of Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal, and Eskom's target for eradicating load reduction is March 2027.

Eskom also reports 5 695MW of surplus capacity. It attributes the remaining load reduction to illegal connections and meter tampering in localised areas.

Why the diesel number is not a generator-sales number

The R4.87 billion is Eskom's own spend on diesel for its open-cycle gas turbines. It measures how often Eskom needs emergency generation. It does not measure how many buildings need a backup set when a supply fails.

That is our reading, and it rests on what the release leaves out. The update covers generation and load reduction. It says nothing about faults on a local network, a municipal substation or a failed cable, any of which takes a hospital or a warehouse off supply. A building with a cold room or a data room buys standby power against all of them.

What are public buyers doing?

They are still tendering. The 19 October catalogue holds 35 generator lines, 8 of them on Johannesburg and East Rand ground. Some are not standby sets, such as welding generators and controllers. A week earlier, our piece on standby generator tenders counted 36 under its own filter, and a good share of the open lines were not new sets. They were maintenance terms.

The terms were long. ACSA's two contracts run 36 months and five years, Rand Water's 24 months and PRASA's 36. A buyer who signs a three-year service contract in 2026 has decided about standby power for 2029, and Eskom's weekly numbers do not reopen that decision.

Two snapshots are not a trend, and we do not claim one. They do show that the buying did not stop in the week the grid figures were published. You can check the lines yourself on the eTenders open tenders page and its procurement plans.

Eskom's own wording is cautious about the remaining gap. It says the system is stable and capacity exceeds demand, yet it still runs load reduction as a targeted measure in high-risk areas.

What a brand should read from this

Three things follow, and the first is the most useful.

  1. Maintenance holders choose the next set. The firm on a 36-month service term is the first to be asked what should replace a failed unit. Find out who holds the contracts at the buyers you supply.
  2. New specifications are written months before the advert. Our piece on what a specification is worth in a municipal tender shows how a named model can be lost to price once it reaches the bid.
  3. The load reduction target is March 2027. Until Eskom reaches it, the affected pockets of Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal remain places where a buyer has a reason to hold a set. We cannot say from the release how many of those customers are commercial.

Do not forecast a sales fall from a diesel saving. Eskom's own saving is real, but it belongs to a different ledger.

Where the installer comes in

Arabella Infrastructure Solutions is a Johannesburg-based building maintenance and construction company. It does not sell sets. It connects brands with the verified electrical contractors who install and maintain them, which is the point where a specification is usually decided. The brand page is for brands.

On Monday

Open the generator lines in the public tenders you track and sort them into supply, installation and maintenance. For each maintenance line, note the term and the closing date, then find who held the last contract.

Then write down which of those firms already fit your set. They are the ones to call before the next advert, not after it.
