Asked plainly, what does cidb 6CE mean has a one-line answer: a grade 6 registration in the civil engineering class of works, on the South African cidb register. The 6 is your ceiling: a grade 6 contractor may tender work up to R20 million. The CE is what you may do with it: roads, railways, bridges, water treatment works, dams and sewerage. Both halves have to match the advert.
That is the definition, and it takes one paragraph. The useful question is who is actually asking for it, and on the board this month the honest answer is one buyer.
We looked, and 6CE is on the board once
We pulled the open board on 15 September, read every advert that names a grade and a class, and checked it again on 21 September. One draws its line at 6CE. Gauteng Roads and Transport is establishing a three-year panel of civil engineering contractors at "6CE, 7CE, 8CE and 9CE" (DRT04/08/2026), closing 6 October at 11:00, with a compulsory briefing on 23 September at 10:00. Miss the briefing and the grade does not matter.
Everything else names a different line, and the spread is the point. A sample from the same board, as it stood on 15 September; several have closed since, and the closing dates say which:
- 1 EP/EB or higher. Msunduzi Local Municipality, a cabling panel, closed 16 September.
- 1 CE or higher. National Research Foundation, a concrete slab and trench for SAASTA, closing 25 September.
- 1SN or higher. South Cape TVET College, hostel maintenance at Oudtshoorn, closing 8 October.
- 1CE to 3CE, and 1EP to 3EP. Two three-year panels at the Maluti-a-Phofung Special Economic Zone, both closing 29 September.
- 2 GB or higher. National Research Foundation, office renovations at Mseleni, closed 17 September.
- 2EP and above. Umkhanyakude District Municipality, smart meter installation, closed 17 September.
- 3 EB or higher. Public Works, replacing the generator at the Johannesburg Constitutional Court, closed 16 September.
- 3EP/PE or higher. Umkhanyakude again, a 315kVA miniature substation, closed 17 September.
- 3GB and 4GB. Waterberg TVET College, two campus jobs, both closing 1 October.
- 4 EB or higher. Public Works, backup generators at the magistrates' offices at Hardach, Kwa-Thema, Dunnottar and Fochville, closed 16 September.
- 4 GB and 5 GB. KwaZulu-Natal Public Works, school sanitation at three Ugu District high schools, closed 16 September.
- 5 EB or higher. Public Works again, backup generators at Meadowlands, Lenasia and Jeppe, closed 16 September.
- 5CE or higher. Limpopo Public Works, a sewer pump station at Letaba Special School, closed 18 September.
- 6GB or higher. North West Health, converting ward 13 to ICU at Job Shimankane Tabane Hospital (NWDOH 17/2026), closed 17 September.
- 7ME and 8ME. Water and Sanitation, four-year mechanical plant term contracts by region, closing 1 and 15 October. Umkhanyakude wants 7ME for a 36-month water works operation, closing 5 October.
- 9CE or higher. Ugu District Municipality, the Margate storm-damage and wastewater works rebuild, closing 16 October.
- 1 to 5 GB. Mkhondo Local Municipality, a general building maintenance panel, closed 21 September.
One 6CE floor, and around it a spread that runs from grade 1 to grade 9 across six classes of works. The market does not have a standard answer, which is exactly why chasing a grade in the abstract is the wrong way round.
That spread is not random either. The buyer writes the designation to match the risk they think they are carrying, and two buyers looking at similar work will often write it differently. Backup generators at one set of magistrates' offices at 4 EB and at another at 5 EB, from the same department, in the same week, is the clearest example on the list.
What grade 6 actually costs you to hold
If you want 6CE, know what the cidb asks for before you start. Grade 6 needs a R3 million track record inside the last five years, R6,5 million in best annual turnover and R1,3 million in available capital. The R20 million ceiling is the reward for that, not the entry price.
Some tender advisory sites say the ceilings are inclusive of VAT, citing a cidb amendment notification. The cidb's own grading page does not state it either way. If that margin decides whether you can bid something, ask the cidb directly.
The pattern worth taking from this
Notice which requirement repeats. Three of the adverts are national Public Works, and all three are EB, not CE or GB. They are electrical work in buildings: one generator replacement, then backup generators at two sets of magistrates' offices at two different grades. A firm registered EB was looking at three adverts from one buyer in one week, all closing on the same morning. A 6CE firm is looking at one panel, and it is a panel, which means an appointment that lasts rather than a single job.
Notice also how much of the board is open to the smallest registrations. A grade 1 floor appears on six of the adverts above and a grade 2 floor on two more, and four of those eight are panels.
So the grade worth wanting is the one attached to work that is actually advertised, in the class you are registered for, in a province you can reach. Everything else is a table on a wall.
If 6CE is genuinely your target, the route is not an application. It is a R3 million civil job, finished and evidenced, and the balance sheet to carry it. Get the work and the designation follows. It does not run the other way, however much the table makes it look like it should. And if you already hold it, the Gauteng panel closes on 6 October and the briefing is on 23 September.
