To find vetted contractors in Johannesburg this month, start with the trade, because the shortage is uneven. On 21 September the firms in our network could cover twelve trades on the West and East Rand, and in five of those trades there was exactly one firm to send. Anyone who tells you they can put a vetted roofer, a gas installer and a plumber on a Boksburg site tomorrow, all from a deep bench, is describing a directory.
That honesty is the point of this piece. The rest of it is what we can actually see, on the day, and what "vetted" has to mean for the word to be worth anything.
The panel, trade by trade, on 21 September
We file every open opportunity by trade and by where it comes from, then match it against the firms in our network. On 21 September that was 1 124 opportunities across twelve trades, 189 of them on our home ground of Gauteng and the West and East Rand.

Read the right-hand column before the left. Structural, civils and plumbing have three firms each, which is a choice. Roofing, solar, water treatment, gas and masonry have one, which is not. If the one roofer is on a job in Springs when your Randburg roof fails, we will tell you so rather than send someone we have not checked.
A firm in the network is not the same as a firm checked for your job. The five checks below are run against the day, not the application.
Where the work is, and where nobody turned up
The wider board on the same morning carried 1 012 open built-environment tenders across South Africa, 226 of them on home ground. 608 close within 14 days and 664 carry a briefing session.
A compulsory briefing missed is a bid disqualified before it is written, and two live examples sit on the East Rand right now. SAPS wants a contractor for cell block repairs at Etwatwa, closing 6 October, and at Crystal Park, closing 7 October. Both briefings were compulsory and both have passed, on 16 and 17 September. Those jobs are closed to anyone who was not in the room.
Still open, and still reachable: Eskom's renovations and refurbishment panel for Megawatt Park and the Eskom Academy of Learning (E3346CXMWP) closes 28 September at 10:00. The Gauteng Legislature's refurbishment of members' offices at the Johannesburg City Hall (GPL006/2027) closes 14 October, with a briefing on 5 October.
The more telling list is the one nobody reads. On 21 September, 21 home-ground jobs had closed with no award published. Johannesburg Roads Agency went to market for HVAC and for fire assessment, services and repairs, both closing 4 September, and for two service-maintain-repair-replace scopes closing 7 September. PRASA wanted two service providers to service and repair generators, closing 4 September. Johannesburg Water wanted servicing and maintenance of fire equipment, closing 1 September.
An award may simply not be on the portal yet. Or a public buyer in Johannesburg asked for an HVAC contractor and did not find one it could appoint. Either way, that is the cost of finding nobody, and it is the cost a private client pays too, only quietly.
One more condition a site works under this spring: Johannesburg Water has Level 1 water restrictions in force from 1 September 2026 to 31 March 2027. As published they prohibit watering gardens and filling pools between 06:00 and 18:00 and washing paved areas and driveways with a hosepipe; they say nothing about construction water. A contractor washing down a driveway or a new paved yard with a hose on a Johannesburg site is breaking them, and the client's neighbours will know before the client does.
What does "vetted" actually mean?
Vetted means five current checks against five registers, not a listing. Directories list. Each has a register behind it, and each can lapse between the day a firm applied and the day it arrives on your site.
- Registration for the work. For public work, the cidb register, in the class and at the grade the job needs. For plumbing, the individual plumber's PIRB number, not the company letterhead.
- Tax compliance status, checked rather than sent, because a PDF is a claim and a lookup is a fact.
- A COIDA letter of good standing, which covers the employer named on it and expires.
- The restricted suppliers list, checked by director as well as by company, because a restriction follows the person.
- The regulation 8 appointments for any job large enough to need a construction manager and a safety officer, with a named person on each letter. For the safety officer, a SACPCMP registration that matches the name.
In all five, the word "current" does the work. A check done at application is a photograph; a check done on the day of appointment is a fact. We have set out the five registers and how to check each one separately.

On Monday
Take the next job you need done in Johannesburg and write down the trade before the name. Then ask whoever you are about to appoint for two things, dated within the last 30 days: the registration that governs that trade, and the COIDA letter of good standing. If either arrives as a scan older than that, you have learnt what "vetted" meant to them.
